Battery Passport: the guide to Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

The Battery Passport is the first digital product passport already mandatory by law in the European Union, from 18 February 2027. It comes from the Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 — a text distinct from the ESPR — and applies to anyone placing EV, LMT or industrial batteries on the EU market.

Frequently asked questions about the Battery Passport

Is the Battery Passport mandatory for e-bikes too?
Yes, for all of them. E-bike and e-scooter batteries are classified as LMT (Light Means of Transport) batteries: from 18 February 2027 they need a Battery Passport regardless of capacity. The 2 kWh threshold only applies to industrial batteries, not LMT ones.
Does it only cover e-bikes, or also cars, motorbikes and boats?
It covers all of electric mobility: EV batteries (cars and electric motorbikes) and LMT batteries (e-bikes, e-scooters), with no capacity threshold, plus industrial batteries over 2 kWh — including those used for electric boat propulsion.
Are starter batteries (12V) in combustion-engine vehicles included?
No. SLI (Starting, Lighting, Ignition) batteries in combustion-engine vehicles are not covered by the Battery Passport obligation.
What must a Battery Passport actually contain?
Chemical composition, critical raw material content (cobalt, lithium, nickel, lead), recycled content share, carbon footprint, capacity and state of health (SoH) accessible to those entitled to it. Supply-chain due diligence obligations apply from 18 August 2027 (deferred by Regulation (EU) 2025/1561).
Does the Battery Passport replace the vehicle’s Digital Product Passport?
No, it integrates with it. MyLime combines the battery’s Battery Passport and the vehicle or product’s DPP into a single digital identity, accessible with one QR code or NFC tag — instead of two separate systems to manage.
How does this differ from the ESPR regulation?
The Battery Passport doesn’t come from an ESPR delegated act: it has its own legal basis, the Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, separate from the ESPR (EU) 2024/1781. That’s why it’s already binding with a firm date, while ESPR obligations follow the 2025–2030 Working Plan timeline. More: ESPR guide.
